If you buy a new Verizon phone with new service, or replace your existing phone, you will need to activate your phone before you are able to make calls. There are three main ways of activating your phone: online, over the phone or in a Verizon store. It is a relatively straightforward process.

Things You'll Need:

  • Customer receipt with order number and location code Last four digits of social security number Current mobile number
  1. Step 1

Back up your contacts on your current phone using Backup Assistant online. Verizon charges $1.99 per month but if you sign up online you may be able to get the fee waived.

  2. Step 2

Turn off your old phone before you begin the activation process. This will eventually lead to the deactivation of your old phone.

  3. Step 3

Go to the Verizon website and follow the instructions. You will be prompted to input the information listed in "things you'll need." Go through the entire process until your phone is activated.

  4. Step 4

Contact customer service and activate your phone over the phone. If you are unable to activate your phone online, you can seek help over the phone. You need to have the appropriate customer service phone number for your area and your particular service. See a link in Resources below to search for the right phone number. You will still need all the items listed above before you make the call. If you are activating a used phone, make sure you have the electronic serial number usually located on the back of the phone.

  5. Step 5

Go into a Verizon store. If you are unable to activate your phone online or over the phone, or if you need additional assistance, you can go the nearest Verizon store. Make sure you take along with you all the items listed in "things you'll need."
