How to Burn Movies to DVD on a Mac

Wouldn't you know that the great movie you bought last week to take with you on a business trip has been taken over by the kids who watch it over and over endlessly. What to do? Simply solve that problem by ripping a copy to your Mac and burning a DVD. The process can take an hour or two to complete, but it can be done and the results are quite good.

Things You'll Need

  • Macintosh or iMac computer
  • HandBreak program for encoding the movie
  • Blank DVD-R disk

Instructions

    • 1

Download a DVD encoding program from the Internet. For example, you might check out HandBreak, an excellent program that is free to download.

    • 2

Insert movie DVD into the Macintosh disk drive. Click on the "Source" button on the top left hand corner of the HandBreak window. Select the DVD on the left side of the drop down menu and click on "Open."

    • 3

Press the Green Start button on the top of the HandBreak window after "Source" has completed scanning and the title appears next to "Source." Encoding takes about thirty-five minutes for a ninety- minute movie. When HandBreak is finished encoding, a message will appear for you to "Put down your cocktail your HandBreak encode is done." HandBreak will also leave an mp4 copy on your desktop.

    • 4

Remove the original DVD and replace it with a blank DVD-R. Click on the title and replace "Blank DVD" with the name of the movie.

    • 5

Quit HandBreak and drag the mp4 image on your desktop onto the blank DVD.

    • 6

Double click on your new movie disk icon and click "Burn" (disk title) under the File menu.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure that the disk is clean and in good working order, or HandBreak will be unable to complete its task.

  • It is important to remember that it is acceptable for your own personal use to copy a DVD that you have purchased, but it is not legal to copy one that is not yours or one that you intend to give or sell to another.
