Learning to play the acoustic guitar can be an enjoyable and rewarding experience. When first learning the acoustic guitar it can be very beneficial to learn with proper right and left hand technique. By learning to play open position major and minor chords, as well as major scales, we will be well on our way to playing our favorite tunes in no time.

Instructions

    • 1

      Using the tuner, tune the strings so that they read, from low (thickest) to high (thinnest), E A D G B E. If the tuner uses numbers instead of letters, the lowest string will be 6, and will move up to 1, the highest string.

      Using the pick, pluck the 1st, E, string. This will give a feel for how it feels to pluck an open, unfretted, string.

      Place the index finger of the left hand on the first fret of the 1st string. Pluck the1st string with the pick to get a sense for how it feels to play a fretted note.

      Learn to play the C major scale in open position as written in the example.

      Place the left hand index finger on the first fret of the 2nd string, the middle finger on the second fret of the 4th string, and the ring finger on the third fret of the 5th string. Using the pick, strum the top five strings to produce the C major chord from the given example.

      Learn to play the open position major chords indicated in the example.

      Learn to play the open position minor chords indicated in the example.

Tips & Warnings

  • Practicing for a short time each day when first starting to play the acoustic guitar will help develop calluses, which will make it easier to play.

  • Never practice "through the pain". If any part of either hand, or arm, starts to become painful, take a rest and stretch those muscles before returning to the guitar.
