Draw an Easy Halloween Tree

Everyone knows how to draw a Christmas tree, but a Halloween tree is a very different task. Unlike Christmas trees, Halloween trees have no pretty green pine needles, tinsel or decorative lights. In the 1972 fantasy novel "The Halloween Tree" by prolific American writer Ray Bradbury, he describes the tree as having many branches covered with mean-looking jack-o-lanterns. Draw your own Halloween tree and use it for decoration this October. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Start by drawing the trunk of your tree. When doing this, imagine your Halloween tree as the opposite of a Christmas tree. That is, it is not full, leafy and green. Rather, it is barren of all leaves. Simply draw two vertical wavy, parallel lines towards the bottom center of your page.

    • 2

Draw the branches for your tree. Again, no leaves or signs of life for your branches. You want your tree to look dead with spindly branches that look like outstretched arms. There is no science to this process, so let your creativity format how you want your tree to look. Simply extend the lines of the tree trunk out to around four knobby, jagged, barren branches.

    • 3

Add your details. While leaves are not present on a Halloween tree, it does not mean the tree is bare. Instead, adorn your tree with symbols of Halloween like jack-o-lanterns, bats, witch hats, ghost, skulls and brooms. Dangle them from the ends of your branches.

Draw the finishing touches. Draw a mean face on the trunk of your tree, or give your tree more texture by drawing thin, spindly lines over the surface of the bark to look like wood grains. The trick to drawing these wood grains is to randomly sketch lines; do not allow your grains to look too uniform or they will not look natural. You can also add some color at this stage. A little color can add interest and dimension to your tree leaves.
