Ink cartridges run out of ink over time. When this happens, there are two ways of handling the problem: replace the ink cartridge or refill the empty cartridge. Although replacing the cartridge is the easiest method, refilling the cartridge is cheaper. Here is a guide to refilling a Brother LC-51Y ink cartridge.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Brother LC-51Y ink refill kit Paper towels Rubber gloves
  1. Step 1

Take the empty ink cartridge and place it on its side on a flat surface like a table. Then cut the label where it joins the top and bottom halves of the cartridge.

  2. Step 2

Open the cartridge casing and separate the cartridge from the casing.

  3. Step 3

Drill through the hole at the top of the cartridge with the thumb drill that came with the refill kit.

  4. Step 4

Fill the syringe for yellow ink with 20 milliliters of yellow ink.

  5. Step 5

Carefully inject the ink into the hole you've drilled, stopping just before the ink reaches the hole.

  6. Step 6

Cover the hole by applying the set screw with the all wrench, both of which is provided in the refill kit.

  7. Step 7

Put the cartridge back into the casing and tape it shut with the aluminum tape provided in the kit. Then put the cartridge back into the printer.
