Instructions

    • 1

Provide your bamboo plant with at least five hours of sunlight each day. If your plant is inside your home in a pot, place it on a window sill or a sunny spot on the floor so it can soak up the rays. If you are planting bamboo outside, scope out a sunny area of your yard before you begin the planting or transplanting process.

    • 2

Water your bamboo plant at least twice a week. In especially hot weather, you'll need to increase the amount of water you give to your bamboo. The soil should not dry out completely, nor should it be muddy from overwatering.

    • 3

Protect your bamboo from the cold weather. If you have potted plants, bring them inside during the winter months. Mulch your outdoor bamboo plants liberally as an added layer of insulation until the weather warms up.

    • 4

Resist the urge to prune your bamboo in its early life. The plant's leaves contain silica, a substance that nourishes the soil even once they have dropped. Leave the dead leaves where they are instead of throwing them away. When a full-grown plant reaches its maturity after five to seven years, then you can prune back the stalks.

    • 5

Stake young and thin bamboo plants to protect them against damaging winds. Tie a wooden stick to the thinner stalks at about two-thirds of their height.

    • 6

Keep your eye on the container in which you have planted an indoor bamboo plant. If growth seems stunted, the plant may have outgrown its pot. You can transplant the bamboo to a larger home with fresh soil and it will thrive once more.
