1
Have a fresh idea. The market can be oversaturated when it comes to the world of designer goods. Be sure that your idea is something new. Is there something already available on the market similar to what you'll offer? If so, what makes your product(s) better? Ask friends, family and neighbors to weigh in on your concept, and be ready for criticism. Remember that for something to succeed in the fashion world, you must outshine artists who are tops in their craft. You will be competing with high-end fashion lines that have been around for decades, so you want a concept that is fresh and modern but will also stand the test of time.

Create a business plan. Any successful business needs a successful business plan. Staring a high-end fashion line will mean tons of time, and brains, devoted to the operation. Create a business plan that works for your current schedule. A time line is an effective way to get an idea of how fast you'll develop the brand and what you'll need during each stage of planning in order to get to the next step. Sit down with someone you trust (a colleague, a significant other or a mentor, for example) to take a look at your business plan and offer pointers. Remember that things seldom go according to plan, so don't worry if things go off course and you have to regroup. Being a successful business person is all about rolling with the punches.

Get started. The sooner you get started, the sooner you'll know where you need to make adjustments. Be prepared to spend nearly all of your time designing your collection, bringing it to life, marketing, finding free help where you can get it, and being the sole soul behind your label. Don't be afraid of failure, and if plan A doesn't work out, be prepared to come back twice as hard with plan B. You'll need space to get started, but many fashion lines (both contemporary and high end) were started in the garage, basement or spare bedroom of the designer's home. Have your concept and collection designed, then move on to choosing fabrics and materials and sewing the collection.

Move ahead. Once your business plan is implemented and the collection comes together, start talking to an attorney to get any legal issues out of the way. This will cost money, so be sure you're prepared for the investment. Some things are not initially necessary for a brand (trademarks, patents), but they may be useful later if the business grows. Find a lawyer that makes you feel comfortable and fits your budget. You can find attorneys who specialize in contracts by doing a simple search online or in your local yellow pages. If you want to gauge the brand's success to some extent, open an online store where clients can browse and purchase your goods. This allows you to see what is most popular without having to fill major orders that might come with department store and boutique merchants.

Get your name out there. The collection is gorgeous, the proper things are in play. Now what? Well, if you don't have the budget to hire a public relations firm, be your own PR and do everything to get your name out there. Hit up local boutiques and department stores and let them know you're open for business. Because you probably don't have the money to shell out for showroom space just yet, consider renting out a small space and holding a reception where buyers and editors can check out your duds, and get up close and personal with the person behind the label. Make friends everywhere you go, and with business cards in hand, be sure people know your company's name before they leave your sight.
