How to Measure String Length for a Long Bow

Every bow requires a different length of string depending on design, brace height and string material. Since bow strings must be replaced periodically, it is important that you know the right string length for your bow. You can measure an old string, but if you do not have the right string for your bow, or if the string is damaged or decayed, you must find the string length from your bow's length.

Instructions

    • 1

Look for your bow's length as stated by the Archery Manufacturer's Organization (AMO). Many bows have this length stamped onto the belly (inside) portion of one limb.

    • 2

Measure the bow yourself if you cannot find an AMO-rated length. Use a measuring tape to find the distance between nock grooves (not tip-to-tip). Keep the tape flat on the belly of the bow to include the length of reflex or deflex in the limbs.

    • 3

Subtract 4 inches from the bow length to find the correct length for a standard Flemish-style string made of Dacron, such as Browning's B-50 material. High performance strings like Fast Flight stretch less under load from bow limbs, so subtract 3 inches from your bow's length to find dimensions for performance strings.

Tips & Warnings

  • Take your brace height into account when fitting a new string. Flemish strings can be twisted to make small adjustments in string length.

  • Do not use high performance strings unless your bow is rated for such materials. Check with your manufacturer if you are unsure about what strings your bow can use.
