How To Get Rid of Mold in Wood Flooring

Cleaning mold from wood flooring is no fun, so use preventive measures so you won't have mold. Repair a cracked finish so mop water doesn't collect on the floor; don't let flowerpots sit on the wood; fix any kitchen leaks as soon as they occur. If you still get mold spots, here's how to get rid of mold. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Estimate the size of the moldy area. If it's widespread, seek professional help (see Resources below). If the moldy area is small enough (for example, less than a square yard), put on your rubber gloves and disposable dust mask and tackle it yourself.

    • 2

Dissolve about 5 tablespoons of trisodium phosphate into a gallon of warm water. (Trisodium phosphate is available at hardware and home improvement stores.) Scrub it onto the floor with a sponge, going with the grain of the wood. Rinse with a clean sponge and water. Dry completely.

If trisodium phosphate and water don't work, use a commercial mold-removing product. Molderizer is an organic solution for removing mold and mildew--use according to the manufacturer's instructions. Follow with a solution such as Safe Shield to keep mold from returning. (See Resources below.)

If you're worried about further mold in your home, buy a testing kit (see Resources below).
