Making your own envelopes from fabric adds flair and interest to what the envelope contains. The fabric can be plain or printed, stenciled, painted or colored with markers and embellished with stickers, beads or other craft items. Using fabric glue and a paper envelope as a guide, you can make simple yet elegant envelopes.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Marker Fabric (your choice) Fabri-tac glue or your favorite fabric glue Blank envelope Scissors Common pins (optional) Button Sewing needle Embroidery thread Velcro closures (optional)
  1. Step 1

Lay a single layer of fabric on a flat surface. Peel the paper envelope apart so the entire form is flat. Lay it on top of the fabric as a pattern.

  2. Step 2

Use the marker and outline the envelope. Remove the envelope and cut along the outline with scissors. Smooth the piece you have cut out on a flat surface.

  3. Step 3

Fold the bottom flap upward until it lines up with the cut edge. Fold one side over the bottom fold and glue it in place. Make sure the corners line up. Smooth the folded edge so there is a crease. If the fabric is quilted, heavy or won't stay flat, use a common pin to hold each fold in place.

  4. Step 4

Place a line of fabric glue along the inner edge of the cut edge of the side fabric flap. Press gently so the glue adheres to the fabric. Fold the opposite flap of the envelope and repeat for the other side. You should have three folded sides to your envelope by now. Let the fabric glue dry thoroughly.

  5. Step 5

Flip the envelope over so the pointed end is facing you. Sew a button onto the point.

  6. Step 6

Flip the envelope over so the back is facing you. Stitch a loose piece of embroidery thread in place that will loop over the button when the envelope is closed. Make sure the loop fits over the button before tying the thread off completely. Decorate the envelope as you wish. If you want to make the envelope close completely, place some Velcro along the inside edges of the top and bottom flaps so it will close when pressed firmly.

Tips & Warnings
  • Write the recipient's name in glitter glue. Mist the surface with a light spray of matte finish and sprinkle glitter onto the envelope.
  • Always use spray finishes in a well ventilated area. If glue gets on skin, wash immediately using warm water and a mild soap.
