How to Turn Off a Gas Water Heater Pilot Light
A great way to conserve energy when you are away from home for an extended period of time is to either turn the temperature of your water heater down, or to turn your water heater off completely. It is a very simple task that can be accomplished in minutes. It requires no specialized tools and when you return home, all you have to do is follow the instructions on your gas water heater to re-light the pilot light. Does this Spark an idea?

Keep the area around your water heater clear and free of debris of any kind. Your water heater should be easily accessible for maintenance or in the case of an emergency.

Turn the temperature dial on the front of the water heater to the "off" position by hand. No tools are required to do this. This will turn off the gas supplied to the burner unit.

Turn the gas cock value to the "off" position using a pair of pliers or channel locks. The pilot light will go out when this is done. This will turn off the gas supplied to the entire water heater.

Wait to see if you smell gas. If you do, call your local fire department or a qualified professional for help.

Remove the protective plate in the front the water an check to be sure the pilot light is out. Replace the protective plate.
