Mix Ammonia to Make Glass Cleaner

Using ammonia is a popular choice for window cleaning. Add a few more ingredients to the ammonia, and you have a glass cleaner, which will make window cleaning a much easier job. Ammonia is toxic, though, so take precautions.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Ammonia Rubbing alcohol Vinegar Mild soap detergent Water Face mask Rubber gloves Container

    Prepare to Mix the Ingredients

  1. Step 1

Choose a recipe for making glass cleaner. There are a number of recipes for making glass cleaner with ammonia as one of the ingredients. Some recipes use rubbing alcohol, while others use vinegar and dish detergent. Whichever recipe you choose, make sure you are prepared to mix the ingredients.

  2. Step 2

Wear a face mask and rubber gloves. Ammonia is toxic. Breathing it into your lungs is not advisable. While mixing the ingredients and washing the windows, wear a mask to protect your lungs and gloves to protect your skin.

  3. Step 3

Mix the ingredients with caution. The best way to mix the ingredients is to pour the ammonia in the container first. Then, pour each ingredient into the ammonia slowly. This will avoid spillage.

  7. Step 3

  10. Step 2

    Pour in the ingredients slowly.

  11. Step 3

Fill the rest of the container with warm water.

  12. Step 4

Put on the cap and gently shake the mixture. Label the mixture.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use a squeegee to dry the windows for a streak free shine. Keep on the face mask and gloves while washing the windows. When you are finished, put the container of window cleaner in a safe, dry place where children cannot reach it. Do not store the ammonia mixture near bleach. Make sure the label is easy to read, so the mixture is not mistaken for something else.
  • Never breathe in the ammonia.
