Wearing your hair in the latest styles need not cost a fortune. While you can treat yourself to a salon visit for a professional hairstyling every once in a while, you can make your hair look sleek and chic at home. Find inspiration in the pages of bridal and beauty magazines as well as in pictures of stars from Hollywood's past. Many of the most enduring red carpet hairstyles were made famous by icons from the 1940s and 1950s. As you style your hair, keep the tips listed here in mind for a flawless finished product.

Things You'll Need:

  • Hairstyling tools of your choice Heat-protective hair serum and other styling products Hair accessories Comb Bobby pins
  1. Step 1

Invest in some of the tools used by professional hairstylists. A number of these, such as flat irons, curling irons and the many varieties of curlers, are available at hairdresser supply stores. If you are on a budget and can only purchase one tool, make it a mid-size flat iron, which is versatile. With it you can add body, straighten, or make it wavy or curly (see Resources).

  2. Step 2

Apply a heat-protective serum or hairspray before using any thermal styling tools. If you will be using heated styling tools on a regular basis, stay away from the metal-plated or copper ones as these cause the most damage to hair. To minimize the harmful effects of heat on your hair and to make sure your hair continues to appear smooth and shiny, use ceramic or tourmaline thermal styling tools.

  3. Step 3

Stick with styles that match your level of expertise. You might think that your hair looks professionally styled only when you wear intricate hairdos, but even hairstyles that are effortless can look chic. You can pull your hair into a ponytail for formal events and look glamorous (see Resources). You can dress up a simple style by adding waves, curls or accessories like a bejeweled clip or a flower.

  4. Step 4

Experiment with and modify hairstyles from your past to give them a fresh spin. Don't avoid buns and braids because you think they're old-fashioned. See for yourself by browsing through style and beauty magazines---celebrities wear various versions of buns and braids even on the red carpet (see Resources).

  5. Step 5

Make your hairstyles look polished by paying attention to the details. For example, comb your hair prior to styling to remove any snarls or tangles, so that your hair is not only effortless to style but also appears smooth when you are finished styling. Keep bobby pins hidden, especially if they do not match your hair color. You can use clear bobby pins if your hair is light colored. Survey your work and smooth down fly-aways with a dot of hair serum before you walk out the door. Seemingly small details make a huge difference in the end result.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep hair serum away from the roots of your hair, as it will weigh it down and make it look dirty. The ends of your hair need protective hair serum to prevent split ends when you use heated styling tools.
