How to Spin Yarn
Have you ever wanted to start a knitting project or a crocheting project but just couldn't find the perfect yarn? Spinning your own yarn is easier than you think. All you need is a drop spindle, some fibers, and some patience. A drop spindle works by using gravity to twist fibers into yarn. Once you get the knack of it, you can spin yarn from any fibers you like to use in future craft projects.

Making Yarn with a Top-Whorl Drop Spindle
-
1
Attach the leader to the spindle. The leader is simply a piece of yarn that keeps the fibers in place. You'll need about 18 inches of yarn. Tie the leader around the spindle shaft underneath the whorl (the spindle disc), then pull one end up and thread it through the hook. You can wrap the leader around the hook to keep it in place.
-
2
Hold the leader and the fibers together. If you rub the end of the leader so the fibers come apart before you do this, it will be easier to "catch" the fibers.
-
-
3
Twist the spindle clockwise to join the leader and fibers. This twisting action makes the fibers into yarn.
-
4
Secure the join while holding the spindle between your legs, then pinch out some of the fibers until you have the thickness of yarn you want.
-
5
Continue steps 3-4.
