How to Cut Glass Tile
Glass tile has many applications, both in crafting and home decor. There are three basic methods of cutting glass tiles, depending upon the type of project you are undertaking and the size of the tiles you have to work with. You'll probably want to use a different method for cutting end pieces for a tile counter top than you would use for a mosaic art piece, for instance. Here are basic instructions for each of the three main methods.
Instructions
-
Using Tile Nippers
-
1
Measure off the area of tile to be broken off. Tile nippers are most effective when used on small, standard-thickness tiles.
-
2
Place the edge of the nipper's tips at the point you wish to break on the tile and squeeze the handles. The nippers are essentially a pair of pliers with special carbide tips for cutting glass tile.
-
-
3
Break the tile and remove the desired piece of glass.
Glass Scoring
-
4
Use a straight edge and a glass scoring tool to scratch a line onto the surface of the tile. The scoring tool should be held at an angle against the straight edge.
-
5
Place a straight piece of wire under the tile, with the scored line facing up.
-
6
Place one thumb on either side of the score and press down firmly, exerting equal pressure on both sides.
-
7
Snap the tile and separate the two pieces.
Using a Wet Saw
-
8
Use a diamond electro-plated blade in a wet saw to cut larger tiles.
-
9
Fill the saw's tray completely with water.
-
10
Use a light, steady pressure to send the tile across the blade.

Tips & Warnings
Always wear safety glasses and use extreme caution when working with a saw. Stand to the side if possible when using a wet saw to avoid being splattered, and cover nearby objects. Working with a wet saw is messy.
