Hi everyone. I'm Andrea Eldridge from Nerds on Call and Callnerds.com for eHow.com, here today to talk about how to get high speed Internet access in a rural area. One of the best options is satellite. The best reviewed companies for satellite Internet are Hughes Net and WildBlue. Hughes Net is owned by DirecTV. They charge $199 for the equipment, then $49.99 per month. They offer great speed, but it can slow down at night. The main drawback is that they have a daily limit on your uploads and downloads. WildBlue's activation fee is $149, then $69.99 per month. They offer a high download limit, but it's a little slower than Hughes Net. One thing to keep in mind about satellite is that signal strength can degrade if it snows or rains. If you have an Internet-capable Smart phone, cell service providers like AT&T and Verizon also offer tethering plans for around $25 to $30 per month. Last, but definitely not least, is long-range Wi-Fi. You'll need a professional to install an antenna at your house capable of receiving Wi-Fi signals from a distance. The challenge is that the antenna has to have line of sight to the source of the signal. So this doesn't work well in very hilly or heavily-forested areas. The downside, it can be more expensive to set up than the other two options. For more information on how to get Internet access to your rural area, check out the links on this page.
