Things You'll Need:
- A list of seasonal foods in your area
- A farmer's market or local farm where you can get the freshest in-season is a blessing!
-
Step 1
An easy way to tell what's in season is visiting your local supermarket. The fruits and vegetables that are priced higher are not in season. Fish that is frozen or farm-raised is not in season. When buying fish, you want to buy as local as possible and wild. When buying vegetables, buy what's cheapest, this is what is in season now.
-
Step 2
If you are lucky enough to live near a Farmer's Market or local farm, you can easily tell what's in season by what they're selling. The fruit and vegetables that are in season will always look vibrant and filled with life.
-
Step 3
There are many resources online that can tell you what is in season locally where you live. What's in season in New York will not be the same as California, or the same with Europe. Each region on earth has it's own produce, so get to know yours.
-
Step 4
Once you learn what's local and in season, just buy these foods for that month. Here is an example of in season produce in Southern California in March: Artichokes , Asparagus, Avocado, Beets, Broccoli, Cabbage, Carrots, Cauliflower, Celery, Chard , Collards, Dates (Medjool), Grapefruit, Green Onion, Green Peas, Kale , Kohlrabi , Kumquats, Lemons, Lettuce, Mushroom, Mustard , Navel Orange, Passion Fruit, Spinach, Strawberries , Tangelos, Tangerines, and Turnips.
-
Step 5
Keep a list of seasonal foods for the year on your fridge or somewhere else that's easy reference so you can stick to it.
