Step 1
Call your local dealer that sells your make of car. Ask about two things. Whether you can simply copy a spare key, or if you need to have a computer chip installed in the key. Newer cars have a computer chip that prevents burglary.
-
Step 2
If you can simply copy a spare, call a locksmith. They can do it quickly and more cheaply than a dealer. Google them to find a few in your area. Call ahead and use the cheapest quote.
-
Step 3
If you have to get the chip replaced compare the dealer's price with two locksmiths. This could be over 150 dollars all told.
-
Step 4
You may need the VIN number and title to verify ownership of the vehicle. The VIN number is usually located on a small metal plate on the dash.
