Things You'll Need:
- Money for transportation
-
Step 1
Generally, tourist visas in Venezuela run out after 90 days. If you hope to stay longer, then you will need to extend your visa.
-
Step 2
Unfortunately, Venezuela does not offer in-country tourist visa extensions. Instead, you must exit the country and then re-enter.
-
Step 3
Choose a destination. If you are in western Venezuela, you can cross the border to Cucuta, Colombia. If you are in Margarita Island, you can catch a short flight to Trinidad. If you are in the southeast, you can go overland to Brazil. Otherwise, you can catch a flight to Aruba, Curacao, or any other Caribbean destination from Caracas or possibly Maracaibo.
-
Step 4
Stay out of the country for 2 nights before attempting to re-enter.
-
Step 5
Upon re-entering, you may be asked for proof of departure. If so, you can state that you plan to leave overland to Colombia. This way, they won't ask you to produce an airplane ticket.
-
Step 6
Be sure to have a valid reason for re-entering. Immigration will want to have a valid reason for knowing why you are spending so much time in Venezuela.
-
Step 7
Try to avoid Maracaibo as a point of re-entry as the soldiers may do shake-downs of foreigners. Overland via Colombia is also harrowing because there are many checkpoints with armed soldiers.
-
Step 8
Extending your visa in Venezuela isn't easy, but it's doable. Good luck!
