Very few people understand the meaning behind Memorial Day. To most, it’s a day off from school or from work in order to Barbecue or just to relax. But Memorial Day is so much more than that. Memorial Day was originally created as a day for veterans to honor their fellow soldiers who didn’t come home.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

A good start for observing Memorial Day is to tend to family members who passed away. Show that they are not forgotten. Plant flowers on their graves, leave them a letter on there tombstone, etc. Just the act of honoring those who have fallen is a great way to observe Memorial Day.

  2. Step 2

Honor the forgotten soldiers. There are quite a few grave markers for soldiers that have begun to sink into dirt, causing them to become lost. Honor these soldiers by clearing away the weeds growing on there site, plant a flag near there marker. Show reverence for the sacrifice that those soldiers made to serve this country. Many cemeteries will be grateful to help locating Veterans graves, so don’t be afraid to ask for assistance.

  3. Step 3

Fly a flag to show your patriotism. Don’t stop after Memorial Day. Every day, men and women put there lives on the line overseas fighting terrorism. Take care of your flag. Any flag that becomes dirty or torn should be retired. Retiring a flag is the act of disassembling the flag (such as cutting out the red and white strips) and ritually setting (such as laying red and white strips so they cross and laying the blue field over the top) within a fire. This is not an act of burning a flag, but a respectful way to dispose of a dirty or torn flag.
