CHOOSE THE RIGHT COFFEE - Start with the best tasting coffee. You don't have to spend a lot of money to get a really good coffee. Some of the top rated coffees available are: Gevalia (more expensive than the rest), Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, Dunkin Donuts, and supermarket brand Eight O' Clock. Gevalia and Green Mountain Coffee is available online. You can pick up Dunkin Donuts at one of their stores, or at the supermarket. Any of these will give you a great cup of coffee.

USE THE RIGHT COFFEE MAKER - I have thrown out every drip coffee maker I owned (and I had several of them). I now use, exclusively, a PRESTO percolator to make my coffee. I bought it on eBay for $10. Now that I know what real coffee tastes like, I will never go back to a drip coffee maker again. The brew they make is immature and makes coffee taste raw and bitter. The percolator brew method brings coffee to it's full flavor, as it re-bubbles up and through the grounds. You won't believe how smooth and flavorful coffee can be. Most modern percolators brew in about the same amount of time as a drip machine. Some are even faster! Mine brews 12 cups in about 7 minutes. They also have automatic shut-off and warming features.

USE GOOD WATER - The water that you use to brew your coffee GREATLY effects it's flavor. If your tap water is treated water it is laced with chlorine and other chemicals that can make your coffee taste awful. You don't have to buy bottled water, but you should invest in a good filter system, like Britta. Or install a Reverse-Osmosis system. This is what we use. We know that all of our drinking water is pure and free of off-flavors, and we only have to change the filter occasionally.

USE GOOD FILTERS - To keep your coffee clean and free of grounds...even in a percolator, use a coffee filter. I put a basket filter in my percolator basket. I just make a small hole in the middle for the stem to go through. Some people use another filter on top as well, like a sandwich.

Tips & Warnings

  • I didn't give specific amounts of coffee to use, I think everyone should play with amounts to find out what works best for them.
