Proper Pool Stick Tip

This article will give you the tips and hints needed to select yourself a proper Pool Cue Stick to improve your game.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A good eye
  • Cue Shaper
  • Cue Stick
  1. Step 1

First thing is first, it is not a pool stick that makes a player, it is the player that makes a player. You can have a 800 dollar Cue stick and you go into the right bar and some guy will run table on you with a house stick. So it doesn't matter what type of pool stick you have aslong as it fits you. Though when first starting out it is better to get your own stick that you will get use to so your game will improve.

  2. Step 2

Next is determining the proper weight, now it isn't like clothing where the bigger you are the heavier the stick you need I've seen guys 6'2 250 lbs. shooting with a 17 oz. stick. Go to your local pool hall and shoot around and use different sticks to find the weight you are most comfortable with. The weight of the stick can be found near the butt end, it will either be printed or carved into the stick.

  3. Step 3

After you find your desired weight head on down to the local Walmart or billiards supply store and pick up a stick of the weight you want. Walmart has fiber glass cues for 20$ and wooden cues for 10$, just look through to find the proper weighted stick.

  4. Step 4

After you purchase your stick look at the tip, most likely it will be very flat and squared off on the edges a bit. This will severely mess up your game for a squared tip makes it harder to put spin on the ball. From here you have several options, you can pick up a cue stick shaper for about 5 bucks or use a piece of sand paper to bevel the edges and make it round. The picture included in this article is of a stick with a perfectly rounded edge you can see with the comparison to the table and the ball.

  5. Step 5

This step will show a picture of a square tip pool cue.

  6. Step 6

Once you get your stick ready for shooting take it to the local pool hall and get a hang of shooting with it. As previously stated you need a stick to get use to. Once you get better at the game you can shoot with a house cue and run the table but through it all you'll still shoot the best with your stick.

  7. Step 7

Finally just play the game. Cue selection is not hard, a sticks a stick, and as long as it's not warped and the tip is round you can be the next Minnesota Fatts. Cheers my friends and happy Shooting

Tips & Warnings
  • Expensive is not always the best way to go, Fiberglass sticks at Walmart have changeable tips allowing one to shoot with it for years and just having to replace the tip.
