Make a Compass II

Making a compass is a great project for all ages especially for scouts.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Sewing needle Paper Pencil Thread Compass
  1. Step 1

Place a piece of paper on your desk.

  2. Step 2

Using a compass as your guide carefully draw a line connecting North and South. This will be used as a reference to make sure your compass is working

  3. Step 3

Next, take a magnet and stroke the needle about 20 times in the same direction. This will magnetize your needle.

  4. Step 4

Once your needle is magnetized, place the magnet in another location away from the needle.

  5. Step 5

Carefully tie the thread on the needle. It’s best to tie the thread in the middle of the needle

  6. Step 6

Hold the needle above the paper you just marked and align your needle with line. This will tell you which way is North and South.

  7. Step 7

Once you established North and South, try walking around the room. But be careful handling the needle. If it’s handled too much it will no longer be magnetic

  8. Step 8

Once it becomes demagnetize repeat the steps.
