Spring is getting closer and the birds are starting to return. Why not enjoy them while watching them pause and feed in your yard at a special bird feeder that you and your children have made yourselves?

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Bird Seed
  • Pine Cones
  • String
  • Peanut Butter (I prefer creamy for this project)
  • 2 Paper Plates
  • Camera (optional)
  1. Step 1

Cut a length of string and make a large loop. Secure this to the top of the pine cone to use as a hanger. Make sure the loop is large enough to hook over a tree limb safely. Repeat this for each pine cone you plan to use as a bird feeder.

  2. Step 2

Spread a generous amount of peanut butter out on your paper plate and gently roll your pine cone in the peanut butter making sure to entirely cover the pine cone. Make sure it is on thick enough to embed the bird seed in the following step.

  3. Step 3

Place a generous portion of birdseed on another paper plate and roll the peanut butter covered pine cone in the bird seed. Cover the pine cone thoroughly and make sure that you go over it several times gathering as much of the bird seed onto the pine cone as possible.

  4. Step 4

Repeat above step as necessary to make sure entire pine cone is covered in bird seed.

  5. Step 5

Choose a tree or eave in your yard area that the birds frequent and hang your pine cone.

  6. Step 6

Sit back and watch the birds flock to your home and yard.

  7. Step 7

Take lots of great pictures to enjoy throughout the year.

Tips & Warnings
  • Place several pine cones around your yard.
  • Refill them as needed.
  • You can also use butter in place of the peanut butter.
  • Keep pine cones up high enough that the birds aren't in jeopardy of a curious dog.
