Did you get gum in your hair? Or did your child get gum stuck in his or her hair? Gum can be difficult to remove from hair, but you don't need to cut the hair to remove the gum. With a little patience and know how, it's fairly easy to remove gum from hair. So, follow these tips to get gum out of hair without having to cut a chunk of hair out along with the gum!

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Peanut Butter
  • Dish Soap
  • Fine Tooth Comb
  • Gum Stuck in Your Hair (or Gum Stuck in Your Child's Hair!)
  1. Step 1

COVER THE GUM AND HAIR WITH PEANUT BUTTER: Begin by applying a generous amount of peanut butter to the gum that's stuck in the hair. Work the peanut butter into the hair and into the gum. Peanut butter is great for removing gum from hair because the oils help break up the gum, making it easier to remove the gum from the hair.

  2. Step 2

WORK THE PEANUT BUTTER INTO THE GUM: As you're working the peanut butter into the gum, it will start to disintegrate. Chunk by chunk, you will be able to remove the gum from the hair. Add more peanut butter as you go, if needed.

  3. Step 3

WASH THE AREA WITH DISH SOAP: Dish soap is great at breaking up oils, so it will help to remove some of the residue from the chewing gum and the peanut butter.

  4. Step 4

REPEAT STEPS 1 THROUGH 3 IF NECESSARY: If you still have a good amount of gum stuck in the hair, repeat steps 1 through 3. Massage additional peanut butter into the gum that's stuck in the hair and remove pieces of gum as you go. A fine tooth comb can be helpful in removing the gum from the hairs, particularly as you get near the end.

Tips & Warnings
  • You may break some of the strands of hair as you're attempting to remove the gum from the child's hair (or your own). This is to be expected, but it's still less damage than would occur if you cut the gum out of the hair!
  • Be patient! The process of removing gum from hair can take a little while!
