Proper winter bulb storage is essential for successful planting in the spring time. This article will describe how to store plant bulbs.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Clean the bulbs by gently brushing off excess dirt. Refrain from washing the plant bulbs, as the extra moisture could cause them to rot while in storage.

  2. Step 2

Layer the bulbs in a cardboard box with an open top. Newspaper, packing peanuts, or peat moss can be used as a liner between the layers of bulbs. Ventilation is crucial. Do not store bulbs in a sealed container or plastic bag. Make sure that the bulbs are not touching one another.

  3. Step 3

Place the box in a cool, dry place in your house. Be sure that they are away from heat sources and direct sunlight. Bulbs should never be stored in freezing temperatures.

  4. Step 4

Periodically check on the bulbs. Every few weeks, go through the box and throw out any bulbs that have become soft and mushy.

Tips & Warnings
  • Special spring blooming bulbs should be stored in a cold place such as a garage or refrigerator.
