Step 1
Battle Mountain, Nevada has recently laid a claim to it's own gold rush. People are arriving by the thousands to try their hand at gold mining by panning for gold. The first thing you need is a pan. You can purchase this online (see resource section) but any pan with sloping sides will work - do not use teflon though as the sand/gravel will erode the surface.
-
Step 2
Gold tends to be in stream beds so find an uncluttered stream in the Battle Mountain area - or, well, anywhere else for that matter. If you're prospecting for gold with kids, it might be fun to drop in a few fake gold nuggets in a recognizable area and let the kids pan for the gold and find them. Anyway, once you find a stream that looks promising, dip your pan in and scoop up some of the bottom material.
-
Step 3
Shake the pan gently, back and forth, to and fro. Gold, being a heavy metal, will drop to the bottom while the silt and other lighter stones can easily be poured off. Pour off the excess water. If there is more silt in the pan, add just water from the stream and shake gently again.
-
Step 4
Hopefully, if you've chosen wisely, there will be gold in the bottom of the pan. Don't discount small gold flakes - these are valuable too as gold is very expensive ($800-900 an ounce). Place all the gold you find in a vial (if you're lucky, a tupperware container!). Make sure to rinse off your fingers as the flakes will stick to them.
