How to Create a Button Symbol in Adobe Flash CS4
The Adobe Creative Suite 4 collection of professional design applications includes a program called Flash CS4 that can be used to develop dynamic Web pages and interactive animations. If you are building a Web page in Flash CS4 and want to have a clickable area that acts as a hyperlink or performs some other action, you need to use a button symbol. Button symbols are Flash CS4 elements that respond in different ways to mouse input.

Launch the Flash CS4 application and open the project in which you want to add a button symbol.

Click on any empty space in the stage layout to ensure that no elements are selected.

Click on "Insert" in the top menu bar and select "New Symbol."

Enter a label for the symbol and choose "Button" as the symbol type. Then click "OK" to enter Button Editing mode.

Select the box labeled "Up" in the timeline at the top of the window. Then use the element toolbar on the left side of the window to design the default state of your new button symbol.

Select the "Over" box in the timeline, open the "Insert" menu, go to the "Timeline" submenu and choose "Keyframe." Then adjust the button design for how you want it to appear when a user moves the mouse cursor over it.

Select the "Down" box in the timeline, open the "Insert" menu, go to the "Timeline" submenu and choose "Keyframe." Then adjust the button design for how you want it to appear when a user clicks on the button symbol and holds down the mouse button.

Select the "Hit" box in the timeline, open the "Insert" menu, go to the "Timeline" submenu and choose "Keyframe." Then adjust the button design for how you want it to appear when a user clicks on the button symbol and releases the mouse button.

Open the "Edit" menu and choose "Edit Document" when you are finished designing the button symbol and are ready to return to the main stage layout. To use the button, drag the symbol to the stage from the Library panel.
