Step 1
Know the facts. The sexual partner you have can also give it to you. The causes are pretty simple but how do you know if this is what you have or is it something more serious? And if this is the problem what can you do to relieve the symptoms? For one, vaginitis causes an itching and burning in the area of the vagina. The itching can be on the inside, outside or both. This is a very irritating symptom because it can make you feel like you need to sit in a pan of cold water.
The burning is not any better either. This happens every time you have to urinate because the infected areas will be in contact with urine which will cause an intense burning. If you have ever had this problem, you will know exactly what it feels like because this is not something you forget.
A discharge can also be present and it will be an indicator of what you have. If it is thick and white to the consistency of curdled milk, you have a yeast infection. If it is a thinner discharge of a almost gray color and it smells you probably have a bacterial infection. The only way to know for sure is to see your physician. -
Step 2
Evaluate the circumstances. If you are having these symptoms here is what you should do. If you suspect vaginitis, try and figure out what you are doing differently. Have you changed soaps, are you buying nylon underwear instead of cotton? If you cannot figure out the reason, go to your doctor. He can take cultures from the affected area and find out what is the cause of your problem.

Step 3
Start treatment. Once this is taken care of, you can start treatment. A yeast infection will require a cream that you can buy from your local drugstore. For instance, Monistat is a yeast infection cream. Whereas, if the problem is being caused by bacteria, your doctor will have to write you a prescription for treatment.

Step 4
Prevent recurrences. One of the most important things you will need to know is how to keep it from returning. There are a couple of thing that can be done to keep this from coming back. The area should also be kept clean as well as totally dry. You should not use heavily perfumed soaps and douching should be kept to a minimum. The best type of product to use for your period would be pads. Tampons have perfume and this could start another bout in no time. The correct procedure for wiping when you go to the bathroom is from front to back. This pulls the bacteria especially from your bowels away from the vaginal area.
