Step 1
Rapid and/or extreme weight loss is common in someone dealing with Anorexia Nervosa. Often you may notice the weight loss before you notice the changes in eating habits.
-
Step 2
Obsession with dieting or calorie and fat counting is another extremely common sign with Anorexia, as well as other extreme changes in eating habits.
Other changes that can signal an eating disorder are refusing to eat, pretending to eat or claiming they are full after little to no food intake. They may even take to "eating" in their room where the food is then hidden or disposed of by other means.
The individual may take up drinking lots of water and laxatives to help them rid their body of what they feel is excess weight. -
Step 3
Exercise can also become an obsession with someone dealing with these issues. Running and avid exercise in someone who often appears extremely underweight can be a warning sign.
-
Step 4
Extreme mood fluctuations are also common. With the change in diet and exercise mood swings are pretty much imminent.
The individual may become extremely aggressive when called on their eating and exercising habits as well as their weight. They can become argumentative when told they are too thin or not eating enough.
You may also see signs of withdrawal and depression as well. They may become reclusive and not do things with friends and family that they normally would especially if the event will involve food. -
Step 5
Irregular or loss of periods. Due to the starvation and dehydration, Anorexia Nervosa can cause ones periods to become sporadic and irregular.
-
Step 6
The lack of nutritional intake can cause the individuals skin and bones to become extremely brittle and they may even experience breathing issues.
There are many other conditions that can be experienced by an individual who is suffering from anorexia so medical advice is highly recommended.
