Want to do your own taxes? You can save money by doing them yourself with TurboTax. With a little time, effort and organization, you can save money by doing your own taxes.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • W2s
  • Calculator
  • Receipts
  1. Step 1

Organize. Take out all of the things you will need: W2s; mortgage interest statement; property tax statement; medical & copay receipts; gas receipts; donation & tithes receipts. These are the basics items TurboTax will ask for.

  2. Step 2

Extras. If you are paying on school loans you will need your interest statements. Also, if you have mutual funds, stocks, a savings account, etc., you will need to input the necessary information.

  3. Step 3

Step-by-Step. The great thing about TurboTax is that it walks you through step-by-step. As long as you have your receipts, you just plug in your information.

  4. Step 4

Giving or Getting. As you move along in the TurboTax program, you can view (at the top) whether you are in the RED or GREEN. Depending on what forms you use and what TurboTax program you choose, determines how much you will pay at the end. You can also file your state taxes for an additional fee.

  5. Step 5

Review. The TurboTax program will review your taxes at the end to make sure you haven't missed anything. You can also manually go back through and "revisit" areas or view them for the first time.

  6. Step 6

Finally. At the end, the TurboTax program will ask you if you want to "efile" or "mail" your taxes. If you efile, you will receive your refund sooner. If you mail in your taxes, expect your refund check in 8-10 weeks.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can seek help (if you need it) through the TurboTax Community (free) or by asking a TurboTax expert for a fee.
  • The program will give you suggestions for the following year.
  • Everyone is at risk for being audited, so make sure you are honest and have receipts to support your tax return.
