A fail proof guide to making a yeast starter for homebrewing of beer.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Liquid Yeast (White Labs, etc.)
  • 1L or larger container with top
  • airlock
  • Pale DME (or LME equivalent)
  1. Step 1

Bring 2 cups of filtered water to a low boil on the stove.

  2. Step 2

Add 1/2 a cup of DME to the water. Boil for 10 minutes.

  3. Step 3

Place top on the pan and place in an ice bath, until the mixture cools to 70-75F.

  4. Step 4

Sanitize container to be used for the starter. Also sanitize the outside of the yeast packet/vial and pot with wort solution.

  5. Step 5

Pur the cooled wort solution into the sanitized container. Place the top on and shake vigourously to aerate.

  6. Step 6

Add yeast to the container. Shake again if desired.

  7. Step 7

Place top with airlock on the container. If no top which can accomodate an airlock is available, loosely place saran wrap (sanitized) and a rubber band over the top.

  8. Step 8

Starter can be pitched into 5 gallon batch within a day. Can be stored longer if needed.

Tips & Warnings
  • Drill a 3/8" hole in the top for the starter. Large enough to insert a grommet and a standard airlock.
