How to Sign Up for Gmail Accounts

Gmail is Google's free email service. Introduced to the public in 2007, it includes chat and phone features, and it is accessible from any browser and most mobile devices. Signing up for an account takes only moments.

Instructions

    • 1

Navigate to the Google Mail sign-up page. On the right side of the page, click on the "Create an account" link.

    • 2

Enter your first and last name. Then choose a login name and check the availability. If it isn't available, the site gives you some alternatives.

    • 3

Make a password of at least eight characters. To make your password more secure, add numbers. A meter to the right of the section indicates the strength of your password.

    • 4

Check or uncheck if you wish to stay signed in on the computer you are using. If you are at the library or another shared computer, uncheck it. You should also check or uncheck the "Enable Web History" button.

    • 5

Choose a security question. This is the question Google asks you if you forget your password. Make sure the answer to the question is something only you know but you can remember. Then type a secondary email that is used to authenticate this Gmail account. Google does this so that scammers and spammers have more difficulty making accounts with Gmail. This secondary email is also used for sending your password to you if you forget it.

    • 6

Choose your location, which is preset to the United States. Add your birth date.

    • 7

Type in the security verification. The letters are not case sensitive. Google uses the word verification so that bots cannot make fake accounts to spam people.

    • 8

Read the Terms of Service and click on " I accept. Create my account." Congratulations, you have a Gmail account.
