Window seats are a beautiful addition to any home, but can be a challenge to decorate. Follow these simple tips to decorate them on your own.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Choose your color palate. Things to consider are existing furniture in the room, wall color, and carpeting color. Be sure to stay within your decorating theme as well, ie: country, modern, rustic.

  2. Step 2

Pick your fabrics. You'll need fabric for the window seat cover as well as contrasting fabrics for your accent pillows. Use a neutral color for the window seat cover and bolder prints and colors for your accent pillows. Match the drapes to any other windows in the room.

  3. Step 3

Have your foam cut at the craft store to fit your window seat.

  4. Step 4

Cut out your top panel of fabric according to the size of your foam. Make sure that you cut it 5/8 inch larger than your foam on all sides.

  5. Step 5

For your bottom panel, you'll actually want to cut two pieces of fabric to make a split panel for inserting the foam (think pillow sham). Allow the two pieces to overlap about 6 inches. Hem the edges that will be on the inside. Sew the two pieces together along the long sides where they overlap.

  6. Step 6

Cut your material to go around the edges of the foam--make sure to leave enough for seams and seam allowances. Attach this to the top panel. Insert your foam piece.

  7. Step 7

To make your accent pillow covers, sew them in a similar fashion as the foam seat cover, but without the side pieces. You'll need a front and a back piece, don't forget to leave room for seams! If you're working with stripes, try to match the stripes between front and back.

  8. Step 8

Put everything together on your window seat, stand back and admire your work!

Tips & Warnings
  • To add drapery with a dramatic effect, hang a curtain rod on the outside of the window box. Use long, heavy side panels and a short valance across the top.
