Things You'll Need:
- Perseverance
- Organization
-
Step 1
Only buy the basic clothing items new, and choose your shops wisely. Items such as plain t shirts and singlets can be bought at places like Target or Kmart for less than $12. Jeans, a trench coat, a black work skirt/trousers and a warm knit will require a little more money but will last forever. Supplement your wardrobe with market or second hand finds which are cheap and often look new anyway. If you see a shop with 'SALE' on it but you do not need any new clothing, just walk on by. DO NOT enter that shop! It will get easier as you do it more often.
-
Step 2
Do not buy a coffee or lunch if you work. Pack your own lunch at home and skip the coffee for a bottle of water. It will benefit your wallet and your health.
-
Step 3
Use the internet wisely. One site I use often is simplesavings.com.au, which offers thrifty alternatives for everything from home and entertainment to transport and beauty. There are many other sites avaliable. Simply google 'save money' and you are left with pages of helpful tips.
-
Step 4
Do not buy things that are not necessary for your everyday life. These include things such decorative items for your house, yet another pair of sunglasses, foot spas (you would be surprised how many people have wasted their money on these, including me)and useless home gym equipment such as ab rollers.
-
Step 5
Make a list of your essentials that you need eg groceries, socks. Go through catalogs and compare prices. This will take some time but will be worth it. Only buy what is on your list. Only take a set amount of money with you some you cannot overspend. DO NOT fall into debt, or increase the one you already have!
-
Step 6
Do not spend money on gym memberships that often expire before you have even attended. Walk or run around your neighborhood with your ipod pumping in your ears, full of songs downloaded from the internet. One or two exercise videos will do, but don't do them every day so that you get bored. Use variety so you don't give up. Ride a bike if you have one, play tennis with friends. Courts are cheap if the cost is split.
-
Step 7
Lastly: reuse, recycle and revitalize. Will your shoes last for a little bit longer with a spit and polish? Is that tiny stain on the hem of your shirt really so noticeable that you must get rid of it. Small things put together make one large saving! I wish you luck on embarking on your saving journey.
