If you do any gaming or torrenting and your computer is behind a router, then you may need to setup port forwarding. Port forwarding refers to the practice of configuring a rule on your firewall or router that lets it know where to direct certain types of traffic. Since most home computer users share a single public ip address, the router needs to know which inside machine to direct traffic to when it is initiated from the outside and through your firewall. This article shows you how to configure port forwarding on a linksys router running linksys firmware.

Things You'll Need

  • Linksys router with linksys firmware
  • Ip address of host requiring port forward
  • Port number and protocol (udp or tcp)

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the administration page of your router, by entering your router's ip address in your browser address bar. For example, if your router's ip is 192.168.1.1 then you would enter:
      http://192.168.1.1
Enter your user name and password when prompted.

    • 2

Once logged in, select the applications and gaming tab at the top of the page. From there select port range forwarding.

    • 3

In the top row first box, put the name of the service that you are forwarding the port for, e.g. torrent or apache. In the second and third box, put the port number you wish to forward and select which protocol in the drop down menu. If uncertain of protocol, select both. Under ip address, enter the ip the host where you are forwarding the traffic. If this is for torrents, then the ip address will be your local machine's address. Check enable and save settings.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure the host you are forwarding traffic to has its address set manually rather that dhcp. That way you don't need to modify the port forward rule if you get a new dhcp lease.
