Fondant is best known in decorate wedding cakes. Store bought fondant can be very pricey starting at about $8.00 a pound. When using this to cover many cakes this gets pricey fast. Making your own at home can be fun, exciting, and cheap. Does this Spark an idea?

  • 1/2 cup light corn syrup
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 pounds confectioners' sugar

Instructions

      In a big bowl mix the light corn syrup and shortening together.

      Add the salt and vanilla flavoring.

      Very slowly mix in the confectioners' sugar.

      Mix the dough to a play doh like consistency.

      If the dough is too sticky slowly add more confectioners' sugar.

      If possible it is recommended to allow the fondant to chill in the refrigerator.

      To use your fondant roll it out on a table that has been dusted with confectioners' sugar. Roll it out to be between 1/4 inch and 1/8 inch thick. If air pockets occur they can be removed by inserting a needle on an angle, then smoothing over the top of the fondant.

      Ice the cake lightly with your choice frosting, preferably butter cream. Whipped frosting does not seem to work as well. Drape the fondant over the cake smoothing the top, then sides, pulling slightly to smooth. Trim around the bottom to finish.
