The average American child today does not know the basic skills to survive in the world should there be a natural catastrophe or man made catastrophic event. Here's what every responsible parent needs to teach their children.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

How to purify water for drinking. Water is essential for life, we cannot live without it. There are many techniques for purifying water in different situations. Your urine can be purified for drinking as well. Do your research on line on the many different methods and show your children how to do it.

  2. Step 2

How to start a fire. Starting a fire is not only helpful for cooking food, it may be life saving if out in the cold. Your children should learn how to start a fire outdoors as well as the fireplace in your home. Be sure to also teach them fire safety along side this valuable information.

  3. Step 3

How to swim. Teach your children to swim in a supervised swimming pool or in the ocean or lake. This skill could save their life in many situations. They should also learn to swim in a rip tide. Rip tides kill many beach goers each year because they just don't know what to do.

  4. Step 4

How to identify wild edibles from poisonous plants. While many plants in the wild are poisonous, there are many herbs, seeds and berries that are edible. Be sure to get a picture book for this lesson so that you don't make any mistakes.

  5. Step 5

Basic Gardening Skills. While gardening is a really beautiful hobby for many of us, it also puts groceries on our table each day. You and your children should know how to garden several types of fruits and vegetables. Should there ever be an issue with the food supply, you will have food.

  6. Step 6

Basic Fishing skills. Its amazing how so many people forget to teach their children how to fish. As the old saying goes, give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he'll eat for a lifetime.

  7. Step 7

Basic Hunting and Trapping Skills. While some of you reading this may think this is a little outrageous, it is not if you're starving. If there should ever be an issue with our food supply and your children are starving, you will need to hunt for dinner. The majority of Americans today get their dinner from the grocery store. What will you do if there are no more grocery stores and your pantry is empty?

  8. Step 8

How to use a map. You may be surprised to find that your child doesn't know how to read a map and follow directions. Make games of this lesson with your children until they get it right.

  9. Step 9

How to use a compass or find direction using natural surroundings. If your child is lost camping or otherwise, your child will need to know how to get back home or to safety. Teach your child the basic skills using a compass and the natural surroundings to help him or her find safety.
