create original Seamless Backgrounds for Webpage or Computer in Photoshop

These are some simple steps, to making original seamless textures, for use as backgrounds on Webpages or you Computer Screen. With this you can make all kinds of neat backgrounds. I used Photoshop 7 for this example, but this has worked in other Photoshops I have used.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Photoshop
  1. Step 1

Create a new square Photoshop file using an even number, my example is 600x600. Make the bottom layer your background solid color & create an other layer, with a small shape, to use for your pattern. I'm using some Mickey's that I made.

  2. Step 2

Make copies of your pattern layer and move them around filling up the space. If you use smaller shapes, you will need more of them, mine were bigger, so only 3 layers were needed. Also create an extra pattern layer copy, you will need this later, leave it's visibility off.

  3. Step 3

Once arranged the way you like, link all your pattern layers together, except the extra one. Go to the Menus: Layer-Merge Linked (or Ctrl+E) and merge the linked pattern layers.

  4. Step 4

Highlight your newly merged layer and go to Menus: Filter-Other-Offset...

  5. Step 5

Make your layer's Offset equal to half of your image both ways (horizontal, vertical) and use Wrap Around. Since my image is 600x600, then 300 each way.

  6. Step 6

Now turn your extra pattern layer back on and move it in any empty space, created by the offset. And that is it! You can flatten your image & Save or use Save As and choose jpg. You now have created a seamless image that can be used for all kinds of applications.

Tips & Warnings
  • This will get even easier, the more you do it and you will learn ways to fill up your spaces, in anticipation of your offset.
  • You can double check your image, to see if it's seamless, by using the Offset Filter again. If you don't see any lines through the center (horizontal or vertical), then your image will go on forever with no lines. Sometimes I hit Ctrl+F a couple of times, to do the Offset again, just as a double double check.
  • This technique can also be used for game application, such as one's like Second Life, that uses a lot of textures.
