Have a bunch of rust in your tank and the BB's arent doing the job? Well this recipe will clean your gas tank right up!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Remove gas tank from vehicle, motorcycle, etc.

  2. Step 2

In this step we will using Muriatic Acid. Be extra careful with this because this is some pretty potent stuff. With that being said be sure that the rust in the gas tank has not rusted the metal out where the metal is very thin. If this happens and you pour the acid in the tank it well eat the rust and could quite possibly eat thru your tank. Pour the acid into the tank, plug all fuel lines, vents, etc., roll the tank around to get the acid to coat everything in the tank. Be careful not to shake the tank just " slosh " it around to get a good even coat. After you think you have a good coat lay the tank down outside and let it set 30 min to 1 hour.

  3. Step 3

After tank has set for a while rinse the tank out with water. You should notice a huge improvement the first time. However if it still isn't as clean as you want it repeat the last step.

  4. Step 4

After you have the tank clean you'll want to take rubbing alcohol and dump in the tank. What the rubbing alcohol does is evaporate any moisture in the tank from rinsing it out with water.

  5. Step 5

After the tank is dried take some mixed gas and dump in the tank and give a good even coat everywhere in the tank. What this is doing is coating the inside of the tank so if there is any rust particles left it will be less apt to come loose. After you finish coating dump the gas out.

  6. Step 6

Replace the gas tank on the vehicle and fill with gas.

Tips & Warnings
  • Muriatic Acid can be found at any farm and ranch store, pool supply, or lumber yard.
  • Use the acid outdoors!

on 9/19/2009 Muriatic acid may work but I believe it is too fast acting and will also react with the clean metal. A more efficient acid to use is Oxalic acid in crystal form. It is slower to clean but will not attack the clean metal. Make a mixture and pour it in the gas tank. Fill the remainder with water, top off. Let it stand for a day. Pour it out and inspect the tank. If more cleaning is needed repeat the procedeure until satisfaction. - Ben
