If you have encountered the Director Player 5.0 or Director Player 6.0 error message that states "This program requires at least 3MB of free virtual memory to run," you aren't alone. This annoying message sometimes happens when you have more than 1GB of RAM and you want to install an older program that previously operated just fine on a computer with less RAM.
The next time you install software and receive this message, don't get frustrated. In a few steps, you can remedy the problem.

Instructions
1
Access your Virtual Memory configuration window. To do so, navigate to the "Start" menu, select the "Control Panel" and click "System and Security" and "System." Basic information about your computer is displayed.
2
In the left pane, click "Advanced system settings." If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password. The System Properties dialog appears.
3
Select the "Advanced" tab. In the Performance section, click the "Settings" button. The Performance Options dialog appears.
4
Select the "Advanced" tab in the Performance Options dialog. In the Virtual memory section, click the "Change" button. The Virtual Memory dialog appears. This is the window that will allow you to bypass that pesky Director Player 5.0 or 6.0 error.
5
Write down the original numbers that appear in the Initial size textbox in the Custom size section. You will eventually reset the numbers back to their original setting.
6
Uncheck the box next to "Automatically manage paging file size for all drives." Highlight the drive for which you wish to install the program. Select the "Custom size:" radio button and modify the "Initial size (MB)" textbox by typing a number in the designated field. You want to lower the Initial size (MB) to a number small enough to allow you to install the program to prevent the annoying Director Player error, but large enough so that the computer will work properly.
7
Set the Initial size (MB): number to "200" and click "Set." Then click "OK" to close out all of the necessary windows.
8
Restart your system and install your software program. It should install without a hitch.
9
Go back to the System Properties dialog and access your Virtual Memory window to restore your "Initial size (MB):" back to its original number. Restart your system for the settings to take effect.
