How to Install a Towel Bar thumbnail
Follow key steps to secure and hang a towel bar capable of bearing weight.

Hang your towel bar with confidence. Leave behind the days when you were afraid to hang even the lightest of washcloths on your towel bar for fear the bar would dislodge itself from the wall. Towel bars rarely fail without also damaging the wall as well. Damage may range from something as minor as chipped paint to something that may require a major repair, such as a large hole in the drywall. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Mark on the wall with a pencil or a piece of masking tape the place where you would like to hang your towel bar.

    • 2

Use a stud finder or tap on the wall with your hand and listen for when the hollow sound turns to a thud-like sound to identify the location of a stud close to your chosen location. Adjust your marked spot to place one end of your towel bar over the stud. Retain your original choice for location if by using the stud you place the towel bar in an awkward or undesirable spot.

    • 3

Attach one of the towel bar's mounting brackets into the marked spot by screwing a wood screw through the hole in the mounting bracket into the wall. Substitute toggle anchor bolts for wood screws in the absence of a stud.

    • 4

Hold the towel bar up horizontally and use a level to confirm its proper position. Mark the spot for the screws. Screw the mounting bracket into place with wood screws into a stud or anchor bolts into a hollow wall. Screw in all of the screws for the mounting plate.

    • 5

Slide one of the end caps for the towel bar over one of the mounting brackets. Insert the bar first into the side with the installed mounting bracket. Place the bar into the other end cap. Slide the end cap over the mounting bracket.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not forget to take into account both the weight of the towel bar as well as the towels when selecting the size of the anchor bolts you need.

  • Do not treat your towel bar as a grab bar. While it is reasonable to expect your towel bar to withstand the weight of heavy and wet bath towels, your towel bar is likely to fail if you pull or push down on it with your full body weight.
