How to Hang Drapery Rods
Whether you install new wall coverings or revamp your home's existing decor, you need to install a drapery rod before you hang the curtains. A drapery rod holds the curtains in place and allows you to slide them back and forth as needed, to adjust the amount of sunlight in the room. Installing a drapery rod is easier if you have an assistant to help you hold it up as you work, but an assistant is not necessary.
Things You'll Need
- Drapery rod
- Tape measure
- Pencil
- Electric drill
- Wall anchors (if needed)

1
Hold one of the brackets up to the window in the spot where you want to install it. Mark the outline in pencil. Use a ruler to measure the distance from the window opening. Measure the same distance on the other side of the window opening, and mark the tentative location for the second curtain rod bracket. Stick a push pin in the corner of each of your bracket markings and run a piece of string between the pins. Use a carpenter's level to ensure this line is level. If it's not, adjust the location of your brackets until the line is straight.

2
Measure the distance between the two brackets and calculate the midpoint. This is where you will install the center support. Hold the center support up to the wall in your desired location, and mark the screw holes with your pencil.

3
Use an electric drill to make the screw holes for the brackets and center support according to your measurements. If you install these onto a wall stud or the window casing, use a drill bit that's the same size as the screws and simply drive the screws right into the wall. If you install the hardware into drywall, you must first insert plastic anchors into the wall to hold the screws. Use a bit that's slightly smaller than the screw's diameter, and press the anchor into the hole until it lays flush against the wall.

4
Hold one of the brackets against the wall so that the holes in the bracket line up with the holes you drilled in the wall or your wall anchors. Insert the screws into the holes and tighten securely. Repeat this step to install the bracket on the other side of the window.

5
Slide the hooks or rings for the curtains onto the rod. Insert one end of the rod into the bracket on one side of the window. Insert the other end into the other bracket to complete the drapery-rod installation.
