Cutting and installing base molding to finish your trim installation is a fast and easy way to make those finishing toughs that make a home special.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Hand miter box
  • Miter box Saw
  • Pencil
  • Measure
  • For painted Trim:
  • Primer paint
  • Finish coat paint
  • Painters caulk
  • For Stained Trim:
  • Stain of choice
  • Urethane Varnish (very durable)
  1. Step 1

    Select the base trim to be installed, making sure that it is of sufficient size to cover all cracks and gaps.

  2. Step 2

    For painted trim apply a coat of primer to the trim and two coat of finish paint.

  3. Step 3

    For stained trim apply stain to trim and finish with two coats of urethane varnish. For a really nice finish sand and wipe between coats of varnish.

  4. Step 4

    Measure the length of the piece to be installed. Make use that you cut the trim accurately (if not slightly long).

  5. Step 5

    Place the cut trim in to position and nail approximately every 16 - 18"

  7. Step 7

    To make an inside 45 degree cut position the trim and saw as shown in picture.

  9. Step 9

  10. Step 10

    For 45 degree corners you use trim cut on 22-1/2 degree angles as shown in picture.

  11. Step 11

    For finishing touches to painted trim apply painters caulk to nail depressions and cut joints. Finish with applying a coat of finish paint.

Tips & Warnings
  • Measure twice and cut once
  • It is always possible to shorten your working trim piece, but a trim stretcher is hard to find (ha, ha)
  • Be extra careful in when using the miter box and saw, one can get cut really easy.
