Things You'll Need:
- motivation
- perseverance
- patience
-
Step 1
First you have to enroll in a medical coding course. You can take the course at a local community college, vocational, and private schools. There are several online options available too (a few are listed on this page). - Once you take the course you have to pass a certification exam.
-
Step 2
Once you're certified. It's time to hunt for a job. It's actually a good idea to start this process while you're still in school. Write a resume, and use key words that are attractive to the medical office field of work. Filing, computer literate, excel..ect. Instead of just listing your previous jobs and duties. Describe what you do. You want to show that you're a problem solver, proficient, and thorough person.
-
Step 3
Join professional coding associations as a student. Be active online, and/or in your local chapters. This is a great place to network, and get to know others in the field. They all have connections. The idea is to get you name, and face circulating.
-
Step 4
Try to get a job or volunteer in a medical office as a student (doing anything). You can gain valuable medical office experience by doing this. You'll come in contact with doctors, nurses, and other medical personnel. These are the "in the loop" people. They know the job openings before they're even posted. They also know other doctors and medical professionals that can offer you a job.
