It is easy to take a few affordable precautions to cut down costs on heating bills. Follow these small simple steps to save money and still stay warm!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Turn your heater off or down at night. People usually like to sleep in colder temperatures anyway, and with an extra blanket, you'll barely notice the change. Keep your bedroom door shut so your heat doesn't escape to other rooms.

  2. Step 2

Place saranwrap on the windows and block breezy doors with blankets. This keeps the cold air from coming in and the hot air from escaping.

  3. Step 3

If you cook something in the oven, keep the door open after you are finished cooking and turn the oven off. This excess heat can then escape into your home, allowing you to temporarily turn down the heater for a while and fit in some extra heat at no cost.

  4. Step 4

Wear more layers. Keep your thermostat lower, and just wear more layers- sweatshirts, slippers, heavy pants. This allows you to still stay warm, especially if you watching a movie or television and don't have to move around the room a lot.

  5. Step 5

Use a heating blanket or a space heater. A lot of times, electricity is a lot cheaper than gas, so utilize this by using items that take electricity, not gas. These items aren't cheap, but they should eventually pay for themselves if they are used regularly in place of a gas heating system.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use a fireplace if you have one- they are a great and cheap heating source.
  • Don't make yourself miserable just to save money! Stay comfortable!
