Step 1
BEFRIEND YOUR ROOMMATE. One thing that can ruin your college experience is not being on friendly terms with your roommate. The two of you are going to be sharing a dorm and you'll want to avoid any hostility at all costs. Facebook them, call them, email them. Send out an offer of friendship, it will pay off.
-
Step 2
FIND OUT WHAT YOU NEED. Does your dorm room come with a bed? A Desk? A dresser for your socks? If it doesn't you'll need to bring these items, as well as any other household things you think you'll need. Examples of what you may need on campus are microwaves, refrigerators, computers, hangers, mirrors and bedsheets.

Step 3
DON'T MAKE THE RA YOUR ENEMY. If your resident assistant hates you, it could make things difficult. Avoid this by following the rules. Don't throw crazy parties in your dorm, don't make excessive noise at 4 in the morning during finals week, and don't break things in your room. Having the RA on your side is an easy way to make living in the dorm a fun and easy experience.

Step 4
ESTABLISH GROUND-RULES WITH YOUR ROOMMATE. What time is quiet study time? What is secret word for wanting some privacy when company is over? When is lights out? Who takes out the trash? All these issues and many others should be discussed the first week in the dorm. Its always important to be open with your roommate, and to tell them if you have any issues.

Step 5
MAKE FRIENDS AND HAVE FUN. Keep your dorm room door open!! This encourages people to stop by and say hi. Try to introduce yourself to every one on your floor. Go to the dining hall with the guys next door. Throw some Frisbee with the girls across the hall. Have fun and socialize, its the most important part of college.
