How to Install an Outside Light

An outside light can be a ceiling light hanging from the underside of a porch ceiling, or a wall light on the side of the house. Either way, the process of installing it is the same, and is similar to installing an interior light. In fact, the only real difference is that the exterior light has to be sealed from moisture. A bead of caulk around the base of the fixture will accomplish this. Make sure the light you choose specifies outdoor use, as indoor lights will rust and fail outdoors. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the electricity to the old fixture at the circuit box of the house.

    • 2

Remove the screws holding the existing light fixture in place with your screwdriver. Separate the wire connections behind it, so you're left with an exposed electrical box.

    • 3

Hold the mounting bracket that came with the light fixture up to the box. Align the screw holes of the bracket and the box and secure it there with the screws.

    • 4

Hook the end of the copper (ground) wire from the electric box to the green ground screw on the mounting bracket. Tighten up the screw.

    • 5

Position the light fixture near the electrical box. Hold the end of the black wire from the light fixture next to the black wire from the electrical box. Twist a wire nut over both wires. Repeat for the white wires.

    • 6

Set the fixture to the electrical box, pushing the wires into the box. Affix the fixture to the bracket using the provided screws.

    • 7

Caulk around the base of the light fixture where it meets the exterior surface, to seal it from moisture.

    • 8

      Restore the electricity.
