Step 1
Copy Important Papers. Before you go, photocopy your driver's license, credit cards (with lost or stolen notification numbers), travel documents and passport. Leave one set of this photocopied package with a family member at home and carry another set with you, separate from the originals.
-
Step 2
Slow Down. At the airport, don't race for your baggage. It'll arrive at the same time as everyone else's. Rushing only increases your chances of slipping or tripping.
Be Informed. On your hotel room door is emergency information. Take a moment to read it. Know the nearest fire exit and what to do in an emergency. Count the number of doors between your room and the nearest fire exit. This way you'll know how to find your way to the exit in the dark. -
Step 3
Be Prepared. Hold a family emergency drill. Practice getting out of your room and to the nearest and alternate exit, in case the first one is blocked. Do this drill before you unpack and remember that your life may depend on it.
-
Step 4
Be Money-Smart. When going out, ask the hotel desk staff about the safety of the area. Is it safe to walk alone there at night? Carry just enough cash, or none, and no more than one credit card. Wrap rubber bands around your wallet and wear shoulder bags across your chest to stop pickpockets and bag snatchers.
-
Step 5
Be Alert. Stay together, stay alert and walk with confidence. If you need to consult your map, step into a building.
Listen to Your Instincts. The most important tip for the safe intentional tourist is to never second-guess your instincts. Don't let fear of being impolite stop you from staying safe. It's easier to apologize than to recover from a personal crisis.
