Things You'll Need:
- Poster board
- Permanent markers
- Creativity
- Good handwriting
-
Step 1
Choose your material wisely. Usually poster board works very well because it is large and sturdy. You can also consider using cardboard or pieces of metal. Just think about how you are going to write on your sign, and what utensils would work best with each type of material. For example, permanent markers write very well on poster board.
-
Step 2
Wording is everything. Make your sign descriptive enough so that people know what you are advertising, but short and simple enough that they have enough time to read it while driving down the road. Use common abbreviations and key words. If you are creating a for sale sign, don't forget to include your phone number. If you are holding a garage sale, putting your address, the date, and the time of the sale is imperative.
-
Step 3
Think about colors. Using neon green poster board and orange markers may sound like an attention grabber, but in reality those colors may offer low visibility. You can't go wrong if you stick with black lettering on a white background.
-
Step 4
If all else fails, buy a sign. Most retailers sell generic For Sale signs and Yard Sale signs. It is quick and easy for you to fill in your information and then stick them up.
